Having recently (although inadvertently) made contact with people I went to high school with through Facebook, who I've had no contact with for 30 years, I now understand the need to think before using social media. It is particularly vital for companies and yes even government to have social media protocols in place. The ABC has done a really great job of putting in place very clear and succinct protocols for their employees on using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.

I guess the core question is: 'what is the future for twitter?' Facebook is blowing it away in terms of growth. I wrote a blog on this (http://brooksieg.blogspot.com/2009/12/is-twitter-dying-or-morphing.html) last year, suggesting twitter may ultimately morph into something entirely different than it is now in order to commercialise its presence. I am in the superannuation space - low engagement product, particularly in the twitter demographic. Perhaps we should do a deal with Starbucks and give away a year's worth of mugaccinos with every new account opened!
